Last Word: 24 May 06   Ken & I went to Egypt 3/24 - 4/9. We went to Cairo, Alexandria, El Alamein, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel. We saw the total eclipse of the sun along with pyramids, tombs and temples. I even had a brief camel ride.
I have good news on my employment status. The IRS finally awarded us (as a sub to IBM) the EMS task order last week instead of giving it to the incumbent prime under which we had worked previously.
Let me know when the nexr lunch get together is.
Previous Last Word: 11 Dec 05    I'm still at BAE. The IRS finally awarded the TIPSS-3 contract on October 28th. It's one of those contracts with multiple awards; in fact, 21 companies were awarded contracts. We are now waiting for the IRS to issue a SOW to be bid on & hopefully we can take the work away from our current prime, CSC.
I've had a couple of short term assignments in the mean time.

Bio:  arrived at NAVCOSSACT in 74 first working for Jerry Connolly under Bill Hughes on the LDMX wrap-around doing the data base for San Diego. Later in MPS and left in 1984 for contractor job while at Cheltenham. Married Ken Belsley in late 80s and they are living in Falls Church.
Marks, James E. "Sr. Chief Marks"
Retired in February 1974 (Senior Chief)and wife Pat moved to Charleston SC and then to Conway SC. In Nov 03 he told BH He never build the octagon house we often discussed, thankfully he says, as the homes on and near his beach lots were destroyed by Hugo. He was diagnosed with cancer about 7 years ago[about 96], has recovered. Related problems and surgeries placed him in wheel chair, walker, crutches, and a cane for several years of rehabilitation. In Nov 03 he is walking pretty well. He and Pat, between them have nine kids, 15 grand kids, 12 great grand kids, and 5 great great grand kids. He is now 75.
Masters, Hugh
Hugh was with CDSI in 1972 coding SFRD that he left to Jack Wilber when he got a GS-13 at Navy Requiting in Ballston. In Dec 2003 he is working with Northrop-Grumman in the intelligence community and sees our Essie Horton at work, a small world.
He and Pat have been married 35 years and now living in Herndon VA. Their son lives in the area working for Computer Associates. Their grandson and daughter are living in CA
BH Memory:. He was a great friend, he took me all over the Navy Yard, and we poked into every building and many staff only rooms at WNY. He taught me to walk in to places as if you belonged; we walked in and through many doors and offices without challenge (smile).



McClain, Richard "Dick"
Deceased -- 15 July 2002. Dick had retired in Feb of 95, 7 months after his wife Gladys retired, at their Gaithersburg MD home.
BH Memory: Dick was one of the first site reps in Gaum for CDSI. He later came to DC area and remained with the company as it changed hands until his retirement. Dick was one of the most delightful people I have ever known. He was always in a good mood, smiling, and friendly.



McGuire, Norman Keith. "Norm"
Last Word: 12 July 05   Work is a four letter word for sure! After six months experience, I highly recommend retirement! I've learned a few things already that were not obvious before. They are:
• 1) Stay out of Home Depot and Lowes on the weekends.
• 2) Don't drive through Hughesville after 3:30 PM on weekdays.
• 3) The honey-do list never shrinks.
• 4) Don't use a public boat ramp on weekends (similar to Home Depot and Lowes), and
• 5) These damned bugs!! Who knew there were so many biting flies and mosquitoes in the world? At least the Guam-like atmosphere in Government buildings in the summer time didn't have these damned biting bugs!!
That Bobbie is really getting the most out of that boat, isn't she!
Let me take a second to explain the "Keith" thing.... All my life until Civilian and Government work I have gone by my middle name, Keith. My family never knew Norm. This was kind of nice because I could maintain dual identities...Norm at work, Keith at home. Now, since there is no work, I am Keith. Norm is the person who you all knew. We had a lot of memories...some are worth remembering.    --Keith

Born in Springdale, WV on March 10, 1949, his family moved to the Baltimore, MD area when he was three years old. He graduated from Patapsco SR High School in 1967, and immediately went to work as an Electronics Draftsman for Bethlehem Steel Corporation. In March 1968, Mr. McGuire joined the United States Navy where he served until December 1977. His assignments were as follows:

• NTC Bainbridge MD (Radioman 'A' School)
• Naval Communications Unit London (December 1968 - December 1970)

Exiting the U.S. Navy, Mr. McGuire went to work for Computer Data Systems, Inc., immediately. Working as a contractor for Navy Regional Data Automation Center at the Navy Yard in Washington DC, he supported development efforts for the LDMX/NAVCOMPARS, MRDIS, and RIXT/SRT programs from December 1977 until July 1978. In July 1978, he took a position with Validity Corporation and continued there until July 1981, working test and evaluation programs for RIXT, SRT, DCT9000, and LDM/NAVCOMPARS.
In July 1981, Mr. McGuire took a position with the Naval Telecommunications System Integration Center at Cheltenham, MD, and remained there until the budget-based transfer of NAVTELSYSIC to JITC in October 1993. While at NAVTELSYSIC, Mr. McGuire worked as Test Director for the RIXT, SRT, LDMX/NAVCOMPARS, I-S/A AMPE, DDN, and DMS programs.
At JITC, beginning in October 1993, Mr. McGuire worked at Cheltenham and Indian Head as the DMS Branch Head, Y2K Project Officer, and ultimately as the Messaging and Network Systems Branch Head
Mr. McGuire's combined Military and Civil Service time is just over 33 years (33 yrs, 1.5 mos.); but his career actually spans 36 years and 10 months in service to DOD with most of that time focused on telecommunications and information technology.
Mr. McGuire has been married to his loving wife, Daphne, for just over 34 years, and has two grown children (Gayle and Scott) and one granddaughter (Shelby). They are the light of his life and the reason for many spontaneous conversations everyday.
In retirement, Mr. McGuire is considering many alternatives, none of which involve DOD. A new Labrador Retriever was born on November 9, 2004 and will be joining the McGuire household as "Gunner" on January 3, 2005. This will occupy much of his time in early retirement. He is considering returning to school and possibly a new career in Real Estate. No doubt, he will continue a rich preoccupation with volunteering through many of the organizations to which he already belongs. He will also have more time to pursue his hobbies of hunting and fishing.



Clint McIntosh
Last Word: 16 Jun 05   ...While I'm not quite so dire as Joe Davis' e-mail implies, it's still just a matter of a short time and I appreciate what you are doing to keep everyone informed.
Joe called me a few hours ago from LA and expects to be arriving later this evening. I'm looking forward to his visit very much and really appreciate the effort that he's making to come and see me.

Previous Last Word:  27 Feb 05  I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. Feel like an old car; no sooner get one thing repaired then something else totally unrelated fails. However, have been able to dodge several bullets last year, and hope to continue doing so this year too.
    Spent a total of three months in the hospital last year (over 5 separate incidents) and will fight strongly against ever going back. What an absolutely mind-numbing experience! You have to put you brain in neutral and stay drugged up if you're going to have a chance of surviving.
    Right now, my tumors are still active, but contained. To the doctors' great surprise they still haven't metastasized to more critical organs, though that's the next step. All told they think I can have a pretty good six months or so. Since they gave me six months slightly over three years ago, I feel quite fortunate. Just started a new chemo treatment using Erbitux (the Imclone drug at the heart of the Martha Stewart scandal) which was finally approved last year.

Recall that Clint had colon surgery in Nov 2001 removing a small tumor, but unable to remove the large tumor. The prognosis was that Clint would have between 6 months and 2 years, glad to report 27 Feb 2005 Clint still here. Bio:  CDSI site support to USCINCPAC and CINCPACFLT LDMX sites (1972-1973). CDSI manager for the pacific area. Staffed and supervised CDSI site rep support at Guam, Wahiawa, San Diego, and Stockton (1973-1978). Rewrote the infamous SFRD program to cut the daily run time from three and a half hours (with no restarts) to 35 minutes (with several restart points).(1976) Provided on call trouble shooting at all pacific sites - the most notable being the Mayaguez incident off Cambodia when the Guam NCP became so overloaded with Flash traffic that processing became totally unreliably. Transferred to London to install and become the first site rep.

McVerry, Theresa Ann
Last Word: 19 Jul 05   I keep busy with my job although I don't know why I will be one of the (few remaining NAVTASCrs) that SPAWAR will get rid of with the latest BRAC announcement. So that said I have been spending lots of time looking for jobs. I can't retire yet, will only just turn 50 this fall and won't have 25 years until March 06. I have been supporting the NMCI program for 3 years now and would like to finish my 5 years left in civil service out with this program but I will have to negotiate something with SPAWAR HQ to stay with them and the program before I get my BRAC/RIF notice sometime next year. In the mean time though I have applied for 5 different jobs one of them testing down at JITC. Wouldn't that be turn of events, one of Kenny's old MPS programmers sitting down at JITC writing DASes on his latest stuff.
Aside from staying busy with work, my family keeps me busy. Both my boys (and two grandchildren) live next door to one another and only 3 miles from me so it is very convenient me to pop over there and see what they are up to.
I visit your site very frequently and look forward to your updates, appreciate all the time and hard work you put into keeping all informed of one another.

Last Word: 14 Dec 05   We are now Lockheed Martin Information Technology having been purchased from ACS 2 years ago. I am presently managing a support contact at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque and living in Taos, NM. A little further away from the waters edge! I am also doing some work for Lockheed on a contract with SSA in Baltimore, so I have kept part of a foot in Maryland.

Deceased -- about 84 I think, way to young. Came to NAVCOMPARS from the White House Project. MPS team leader that developed SIOP NCP for London. We had a great time with Joe Davis at one release party (smile).

Deceased -- I believe from a brain cancer in late 80s. He was a retired senior chief at NAVCOSSACT on LDMX support as I recall. Came on with NAVCOMPARS in "wrap-around." Retired around 84 to his home in Clinton MD area.
BH Memory: The "cook outs" and meats from Nick's. and going to the track for horse racing.

Last Word:16 Jul 05   Gary came by my table at a local resturant we both visited, I had not seen him with his back to me as Nancy and I came in, not that I was looking anyway. Really great to see him, he is retired but back at work three days a week.

Last Word: 29 Sep 06    Joan and I would like to host he next Navy get together. We were thinking Sunday October 29, from 2-5PM. This would give every one a chance to talk in a more open setting. We would like to call a coffee and dessert function. So if the 29th is good for you, you can broadcast this to Navy folk. Even if it turns out to be you me Nancy and Joan we will still go ahead with it. Have everyone RSVP to either you or me so we can get a head count.
Bio:  Worked in TPS/TCS, left in 79 (BH thinks) for job with IRS for about a year and then formed a company with a partner. He and Joan live in Fairfax Station VA with their three children. Henry Jr. graduated 18 May 06 from George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax with a degree in Computer Science, and now he is talking about going after a Masters instead of getting a job; completed his second year at George Mason, working on his IT degree. Katelynn has completed her first year at Paul VI catholic high school, and has maintained a 4.0 average. And she is getting her drivers license!
     The family did a cruise and land tour of Alaska this summer [04]; toured Yellowstone 105]; Russia [06]. Reported 18 May 06...had a minor hernia operation about 8 weeks ago and am doing OK. Joan and I are volunteering this summer at Wolf Trap, as volunteer rangers(big title for parking cars).
BH Memory:  Baby "boy Monti"of Chicago showed up in dark suit, white shirt and tie each day, sat at desk and said nothing. Hughe Masters took in tow and "motor-mouth" has not shut-up since. In Feb 2005 at a lunch gathering at Zio's after a Hinson eye appointment we found Henry and Mulvenna were vacationing at Yellowstone at the same time that summer. They met for dinner and celebrated Jerry's birthday, there are photos posted.



Moran, Jim
23 Mar 03 -- Jim was the TD at CINCLANT/CINCLANTFLT/SACLANT when the first NAVCOMPARS was installed. He noted in response to a second reunion, " I can tell you, we as the user/requirement guys, put in as many hours as the developers. We all learned as the process proceeded to a successful install." He retired in the late 70s and opened a Computer Consulting Company, had about six clients, two of them were CHM and ECI. Jim hired Bill Rettig and Bob Weider for CHM. He retired again in April of 2000. Also said in 23rd e-mail, ". . .my wife and I bought a new Winnebago Motor home and have been traveling"

Last Word:  30 Mar 04 -- Moretz here in London and will be for another two years--God willing and the river don't rise. I find your updates for someone like me far removed from DC the best for keeping me in the loop with events as I certainly don't get any news from SPAWAR. No news to report on this end except I have never been so busy. Still, the alternative does not warrant thinking about.

Deceased -- BH Memory: Ron was retiring from the Navy and found to have cancer. He worked with BH at Cheltenham Bldg 50 for several months before the cancer got him. Was a marvel in the good spirits and work ethic he demonstrated under the most trying circumstances.

BH Memories: He was my friend. I first met him in the RCS subsystem in 74, but was a COBOL pgr and moved to SPS as fast as he could. Refused to shave his beard to take job on White House project. He appeared quiet to most, but as he says, "The Army taught me . . …" He did not jump in, or volunteer often, but he worked hard, did great work, and got the task done every time. He has a quick, dry wit and if you got him going with his one-liners you would soon be in tears from laughter.

BH Memory:   Jerry was a govie and one of first sige reps at Camp Smith [if memory serves here in Aug 05]. Clint McIntosh in 2000 gave me his phone number to contact for the 2000 [Y2K] NAVCOMPARS Reunion as Jerry did not have e-mail. Notes show he was going to try and come, but got no more from him.
Other's Memories:  Lorenz -- 8 Aug 05: "I remember Jerry well from our 'business' trips to Hi. His mom had a primo house on the beach at the North Shore. He claimed he could smell Kilauea erupting. Aloha Jerry. - Rich Lorenz"
Monti -- 9 Aug 05: " I remember Jerry, when he had a bunch of us over to his house and served sushi, my first time for raw fish. When I read Rich Lorenz's last word about Jerry, I also remember his beach house on the North Shore. I was there with Jerry Mulvenna back in the 70's. Jerry said his dad bought an old Army Barracks and moved it to his North Shore Property, the whole thing cost him $4,000, land and cottage."

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Delmer Curtis Mullins Sr., 62, passed away in a local hospital. A native of Dunham, Ky., Mr. Mullins retired as a chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service. He also retired from civil service. He was a naval veteran of Vietnam. Survived by wife Sandra, two daughters, and three grand kids. A graveside service held in Arlington National Cemetery. Donations were made to the American Cancer Society. Bio: -- Curt worked for Nick Spangler and was the last Site-Rep at NTCC Breezy point before it closed. He worked for COMNAVSURFLANT until he retired

Last Word: 17 Aug 05    Everything continues to go well on the trip. We are now in the Bay of Bengal on our way from from Singapore to Sri Lanka. Despite Pat's misgivings about travelling during the monsoon season, there has been very little rain on the trip. Yesterday was a perfect day at sea and today looks pretty good as well.Thus far, we have visited Bangkok,Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore. Our stop in Kuala Lumpur was cancelled due to an unhealtthy haze that enveloped the city due to fires in nearby Sumatra. Due to the cancellation, we spent two days in Singapore which was not enough. Singapore is one place in Asia where I could easily spend a week.We had a great three hour walking tour of Singapore's Chinatown and visited a very interesting Bird Park. I also had the obligatory Singapore Sling at the Writers Bar in Raffles where the drink was invented.. Today we have a lecture on Sri Lanka's religions to help us understand the country that we will be visiting on Saturday. --Jerry

Bio:  Waiting input. Retired from NIST Jan 2004 and in Mar took trip to Australia and New Zealand.
BH Memory:   Wrote MPJA in 72 and I think installed first four sites. Left in 19xx to NIST got his Doctorate in Computer Science at NIST and retired in Jan 03(?). Always said only knew three instructions, but knew them well, CLI, MVI and B. And that was true, in NCP every message was moved into MPS processing one character at time until BH fixed in 76.



Munari, Robin Lynn
Robin Lynn Munari, 51, of Mechanicsville, MD, died on April 22, 2006 in Bayside Care Center, Lexington Park, MD.
Born June 26, 1954 in Fort Leavenworth, KS, she was the daughter of the late Angelo G. and Joan Walker Munari. She resided in numerous locations in the United States and Europe during her father’s career in the U.S. Army and graduated from the Munich American High School in June 1972. She received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Purdue University in 1977, followed by a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Information Systems in 1987 and completed a Masters in Business Administration from Florida Institute of Technology in 1993. Chef Petty Officer Munari enlisted in the United States Navy at Naval Air Facility, Washington, DC in September 1989. In 1990 she was transferred to NR ASWOC 0466 in New Orleans, LA. From March 1991 until November 1994 she was assigned to NR Naval Space Command 0166 in Dahlgren, VA as a Data Processing Analyst and Technician. From December 1994 until November 1996 she was assigned to NR SPAWAR HQ 0366 as a Tactical Training Division Instructor in San Diego, CA. From December 1996 until November 1998 she returned to NR Naval Space Command 0166 in Dahlgren, VA as an ADP Software Technician. From December 1998 until September 2001 she was assigned to NR Naval Network Warfare Command Net Eng, Dahlgren, VA as the program’s webmaster. She continued her duty at the NR Naval Network and Space Operations Command 0266 from September 2001 until October 2005. Chief Petty Officer Munari was selected as Program 18’s 2004 Sailor of the Year. She retired in January 2006.
She is survived by her devoted partner, Michael Worth of Mechanicsville, MD.Obit from Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Homes online

MUNARI, Robin Lynn, 51, of Mechanicsville, retired Navy chief petty officer and information systems technician, died April 22 at Bayside Care Center in Lexington Park.
Badua, Cindie Quiroz:  I'm so sorry to hear about Robin. She used to give me tennis lessons when I NCTSW. Do you know what happened to her?
Campbell, "Mitch":  I can picture her. I believe she worked with Joe Davi's gang (Donnie Love, Jim Ridgeway, Donnie's brother and his wife). I believe it was on the MCS project vice MDS.
Ridgeway, Jim: Robin worked for me supporting software control of both the Message Conversion System Ada source as well as the Directory Systems Components "C source code" which was supporting the MCS and additionally managed libraries with Cadre Case data diagrams and Interleaf documentation system. This was during the early/mid 90's. Later she supported Naval Network and Space Operations Command as a Naval Reservist helping with web applications
Fendler, Eric: It's been a long long time (10 years +) but I remember her - she worked down in the basement when I started working with Jim and company on the MCS side of things. I remember her as a very pleasant person. 51 is so young! Was she sick?
Herrewig, Cathy: Steve Gagnon (UNISYS rep at Cheltenham) and I used to play tennis everyday with Robin. I am very sorry to hear this news. I would like more info on her death if you can find anything.
Ging, Earl:  ...today I spoke to one of her coworkers. She worked here in Rosslyn for AFPCA (Air Force Pentagon Communications Agency). Her coworker told me she died of brain cancer. Said she had no family, just the man she had lived with for years. There were very few people at her funeral. Her coworker (Effie Mills) is going to send me an article about Robin. I'll forward it on to you when I get it.

Yes, Robin worked with us on MCS. I later saw her at WNY after Cheltenham closed down. I don't know who she worked with there.   -Donnie

Bio:  Hired by Don Jochum in 1990. first day reported for duty, Don had retired!! Working for JC was best job I have ever had the privilege to have!! Now working for IRS located in Oxon Hill, no bridge to cross!! Married to Dolores 2001, raising 2 beautiful children in White Plains MD, Amanda (Branan) Nairn, adopted 1998 and Matthew born 1995. Neunert, David "Dave"
CDSI contractor in TCS/TPS in 72. He left in 75 for job at Washington Post. In 1981, he went to NASD from which he retired in mid 90s. He and second wife Victoria now reside in Chapel Hill, NC.

Deceased -- in 98(?). E-mail from Fritz in 2000 noted Bill had passed a couple years back. Bill was sited rep at San Diego and I found listed in a 1983 San Diego phone list.

I never actually worked for NAVTELCOM or NAVCOSSACT directly; however, I spent a lot of time at NTC-Ward Circle, Pentagon, Crystal City : NCSC PENTAGON: NAVPECOS(I think this acronym is right): and bldg 196 WNY.
    I started with NAVELEX in 1968 at WNY, Bldg 212. We became WashDiv and I was with them until NAVTELSYSIC was established at Cheltenham. I stayed there through the transition to JITC and the move to Indian Head. I retired in January 2001.
I live in Waldorf piddling and enjoying the grandchildren.
