Previous Last Word: 26 Feb 06 Well, with the bird flu likely to make it to North America by summer, it may be the better part of valor to order some nano-masks. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a few on hand just on general principles, plus, they're likely back-ordered for a few weeks or months by now. I'm not educated on what to look for specification wise -- maybe others can offer some pointers, etc.
OK, it looks like if you're going to spring for masks, you may want to stick to 3M branded items; best prices I found were:
- 3M N95 mask: box of 30 - $17.99

- 3M N100 mask: $6.05 each

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
E-mails received 20 Mar 06, "... our Friend Charlie Paris passed away last night (not sure if that was Sunday Night or into Monday morning) of a heart attack." He left us from his Florida home, funeral arrangements will be provided as that information becomes known.
Helen Paris notes: 21 Mar 06 Dear Bob,
It is so funny that Charlie always read me your emails about people who passed away and now it was his turn. It was so sweet of you to send the email to everyone.
Charlie died Sunday nite at home; he had one hell of a heart attack. I believe his heart went because of his one lower functioning kidney that he had left. The funny thing is he was outwardly in the best of health. He had lost weight, exercised like crazy and was tan as a berry. My heavens he was gorgeous to behold.
We had a wonderful, wonderful life together and I will miss him forever.
Thank you for sharing his loss with all those who knew him.
Take care,
Helen
Charlie's Last E-mail to BH: 12 Jul 05 left Titan Corp last August and retired. Helen and I have been living at our house on Lake Gaston since we left Hawaii. Since retirement, we have been spending lots of time with our six grandchildren, family and friends. We plan to start doing the "snowbird" thing and spend the winters in south Florida and the rest of the time in Virginia.
There was a bump in the road back in March when I had surgery to
remove my left kidney due to cancer. The doctors said it was a non- aggressive type tumor, so I have not needed any other treatment. I rebounded very quickly and have completely resumed normal activities.
Bio: Retired from Titian August 2004 - My first experience with LDMX/NAVCOMPARS came when I was assigned as Computer Officer at NTCC Crystal Plaza. I did that job from June 1977 until I retired from the Navy in May 1980.
From November 1981 through June of 1987 I was the LDMX Site Rep at NTCC Crystal Plaza. I worked for CDSI during that period and worked alongside Roger Randall for the first two years.
In 1987 I went to work for CSC in the LDMX/NAVCOMPARS Configuration management group in Cheltenham. Ken Stiles ran the group and we all worked for Dave Clarke.
After moving to Validity in 1992 and later Titan corporation, I still worked in configuration management for COMNAVTELCOM and the group maintained the software library and site unique stuff until Cheltenham closed down.
Retired to porperty purchased in 1989 on Lake Gaston VA.

For your info, I retired in July 2004, after being with Validity/Titan on and off for over 20 years. Health is really very good although I have had cancer (in remission for ten years now) and mini-strokes. Finally had to quit smoking. I still miss it after 8 months. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Hope all is well with you and family. Thanks for the updates on the NAVCOMPARS/LDMX gang.

1970-1974: Data Base Chief: Worked with the NAVCOMPARS chief, Tom Douglas. This position required that I try to make sense out of a developing NAVCOMPARS database. Boy was that a challenge.
1975-1976: NAVCOMPARS Chief at NAVCOMMSTA Wahiawa Hawaii. One primary project was to develop the initial Common Source Routing File concept and procedures. The CSRF was developed at NAVCOMMSTA LANT where several NAVCOMPARS database experts worked with Gerry York and Dave Gaddis to kick-off the initial concept.
1976-1980: NAVCOMPARS Officer at NAVCAMS MED. Worked with Jim Kurtz, Harry Pickett, Bill Turrentine, and Stan Wassel. I retired from the Navy in 1980.
1980-1983: I was a NAVCOMPARS Site, at NAVCAMS MED, after being hired to work for CDSI by Dick Wetzel.
1983-2004: I was hired by Adrain Pittman to work for Validity Corporation. I was the NAVCOMPARS/LDMX T&E Department Manager. I left Validity after being diagnosed with Throat Cancer and returned about three years later. By now, Validity had been acquired by Titan Corporation.

Last Word: 28 Sep 06 [Comments to Deyermond] As far as your ablation - good luck to you. I did very well for about 4 and a half years after mine, then I started to have problems again with arrhythmia. Had a pace maker implanted about 18 months ago which maintains my lower heart rate at 59. Works pretty well. Encountered another problem 11 months ago where my heart was really bothering me when it was in the 90's! For use A Fib/Flutter types, the 90's is "low." After 4 months the Doc's couldn't figure out what was wrong and I was admitted to NRMC Guam. My luck was that the admitting Doc was a bone doc and just happened to run his hand down my back. He discovered that my spine was out of place (had been for 28 years). He popped my spine back into place and I have been doing well since then. Still need the pace maker and the Diltiazem, but feel good. Again, good luck with your ablation, really hope it does you well.

Bio: -- As of 18 Aug 05: Since April 2004 employed as Deputy, Program Director Information Technology for Commander Navy Region Mid Atlantic (CNRMA).
After two tours in Navy as a Radioman (1970-1974 and 1976-1979) was hired by Validity Corp (then in Clinton, MD) In Dec 1979 performing CUDIXS/NAVMACS certification testing and deployment. In August 1982 selected for a government position at NAVTELSYSIC Cheltenham, MD working for Mr. Jack Hester. It was a great time in the automation world, systems were "ahead of the times" although quite antiquated by today's standards.
In October 1986 selected as the Area Operations Officer at NCTAMS LANT Norfolk VA filling the position that Mr. Dave Johnson vacated moving to COMNAVTELCOM Washington DC. The Area Operations and Comm department were merged into one department at the "NAVCAMS" in 1992 so I then became the Ops/Comm Officer. Tremendously interesting and challenging for the years that followed. SHF communications came into existence along with major changes in message processing and merger/shutdown of Comm facilities as well as AUTODIN.
In June 2000, accepted the position as the Technical Director (civilian OIC) of NCTL Det Cutler Maine. This is the Navy's premier VLF site (submariners will know this site well). Cutler is a remote site on the north east coast of Maine, fairly isolated since the closest Wal Mart, movie theater and traffic light is 60 miles away! Beautiful country but isolated, cold and snowy. I accepted this position since I was born and raised in Maine, about 100 miles from Cutler. After being away for some 30 years, it was tough getting readjusted and I decided it wasn't for me. I was fortunate to be able to transfer back to the Norfolk area after 4 years in Cutler.
My children were both born at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton but are Virginians at heart. Amanda (now 24) graduated from Radford University in 2003. Meredith (who just turned 21) will graduate from James Madison University in 2006. Neither are married yet! Married to the same great lady (Jane) and will celebrate our 28th wedding anniversary in March 2006. Not planning to retire soon even though I'll hit 55 in a couple of months.

Still doing the Navy thing with the reserves. Weekend before last, I was in Millington TN for Chiefs Pinning, a Dining Out for 100 or so or our Nation's finest, and Sunday we dedicated a new Joint Reserve Intelligence Center. A nice way to end one's tour. A couple more retirements to conduct for some of my folks and a change of command in December is all that's left to do as Commander Reserve Intelligence Area Three. Then I'm off to Reserve Intelligence HQ in Ft. Worth for two years as head of training for the Navy Reserve Intelligence Program. That will put me to 37 years of Navy service. Might just have to drop anchor after that.
Kindred Healthcare continues to move into the 21st century. Sometimes I think I'm at the helm. Other times, I'm sure that I'm pushing a rope. With 81 hospitals spread around the country, you can only imagine the variances in procedures. Sort of like walking into an LDMX site after having been at a COMPARS site. Plenty of willing people. Plenty of hard work. In need of some direction and in desperate need of training. If you want a second career, take up assisting folks with their medical interchanges at one of your local hospitals or nursing homes. They'll benefit from your intellect. You'll benefit by the intellectual exercise.
Say Hi to the gang. And, keep sending the emails. I'm sure that one day I'll be in DC when these lunches occur and be firing off a "how do I get there" message. Until then, keep the communications coming. -- Hank

Previous Last Word: 11 Jun 05 Picture came out fine. It was just scary to see the label UNIVAC 70/45 on what should have remained an RCA Spectra 70/45. If the UNIVAC 70/45 wound up anything like the UNIVAC 1500 System with the 1218 processor, 1240 tape transports, 1549 card reader and 1569 drum printer then I know I would never be impressed. I first ran the UNIVAC 1500 system at COMSUBLANT Staff in Norfolk in 1966, which is where I first met Don Jochum when he was peddling UNIVAC hardware. At one point he was trying to peddle this RAM or Random Access wide mylar tape memory something or other that never worked from the first day it was installed. Don accused the Navy of having the sailors sabotage his new cartridge machines but even an independent test with no sailors present showed the equipment was faulty. He tried to tap dance the O-6 who was at the helm but after Don left Captain Riley said that stuff had to go right now and that it would never be on an Atlantic Fleet Submarine Tender, so I got a hand jack and moved all 8 of those units out into the alley and called Don up to tell him where they were and that it looked like rain. He had an excrement hemorrhage over that deal and over 4 years later when he was now a GS at NAVCOSSACT and he came around the corner and saw me I think was the second time he dirtied himself on the spot especially when he found out from Bruce Arnold & John Springett that guess who was on the Spectra 70/45.

Merry Christmas From the Randall’s
Seems like every year when I sit down to write our Christmas letter I’m so amazed at how fast the year has gone by. Or is it just that we’re getting older? Which ever the case may be I enjoy reflecting on the year gone by. Last year I didn’t get a letter written as we had moved and were in the process of moving into our new home. Barely got a tree up let alone any of the other Christmas trimmings. But I’m getting ahead of my self so let me back up and fill every one in on what has happened since I last wrote.
In Sept. of 2003 Randy finally retired! We decided that since we’d been in the tropics for almost 10 years we wanted to move some place that didn’t have “cold” winters. So we were looking at Florida. We did a lot of shopping on the web for homes and saw that we could get the most house for the money in this particular area. So we made all the arrangements with moving companies and what ever else needed to be finalized and we moved to Spring Hill, Florida. It’s on the Gulf Coast side about an hour north of Tampa and an hour west of Orlando, home of Disney World! We first stayed with Randy’s oldest and dearest friends the Knott’s in Pensacola, FL to use as our home base. We came south to Spring Hill to look for a house, found one and then proceeded to travel around and visit with friends and family until the closing on Dec.1. It was so good to see every one and we even got to spend Thanksgiving with Randy’s daughter Michelle and her family. It was the first time in years that we’d been with family for a major Holiday. The only family we missed seeing was my son Jay and his wife Priscilla out in Texas. Christine, Randy’s youngest daughter had a baby girl, Emma, the day after Thanksgiving. She swears it was the turkey that put her into labor.
So we got to Spring Hill and have settled in to a life of routine and contentment. Randy has adjusted very well to retirement. Says he “should have done this years ago”. He had a workshop built and has been trying to get cabinets built so he can get organized and we can start doing woodwork again. That is when I don’t have him doing my “honey do” list.
It’s so nice to be back in the mainland to be able to see family more often. My folks wintered with us for a few months last winter. Ron has stopped by a time or two while he was in FL on business. Andrew and Michael, my two grand sons got to come and stay three weeks with us during the summer. Michelle and her family stopped by for a weekend while on their way to take a cruise out of Tampa. We drove up to NC to get our stuff out of storage and stayed at Ron’s so got to see Leighton, the youngest grand son again. While there we made a side trip to Winston Salem to see the newest grand daughter Emma and make sure that Maddy was enjoying being a new big sister. I just wish we lived closer to everyone.
I joined a local quilt guild and am teaching quilting at the church that I attend. Also helping with the Wed. evening fellowship meal. Never thought I’d be cooking for 200 people for fun! Recently, with God’s prompting and the guidance of my church and the Chaplin of the prisons here in Hernando County, I’m trying to get a ministry going that well empower women in Christ and life once they are released from prison. I’m starting relationships with women while they are in prison hopefully to continue once they are released, to keep them on track with Bible study and support groups. I’ll appreciate prayers from all on that.
Life is good and we feel very blessed. I hope that each and every one of you are enjoying this Holiday Season and especially that you hold in your heart the reason that we celebrate Christmas, the birth of the Savior, Jesus!
Merry Christmas,
Randy and Terri

As soon as I have more information I will pass it on to you. You [JC] have met her at my house. She was here in March with the rest of the Bid Whist Club members. She worked on the third floor in bldg 196 and on the fourth floor in bldg 143. I have known her for years. For the past five years she has been taking care of her husband who has been in and out of the hospital any number of times. And now she has gone – so sad. -- Sincerely – Ernestine
