As for me, I'm still doing a bit of traveling around the globe, Scotland this year. Hate to say it but I'm starting to enjoy seeing foreign countries a bit less. Maybe travel more in the USA next year while my health holds up.

Bio: -- Pat retired at the end of May 2003 and stayed at home and enjoying her [then] 15 grandchildren. The oldest graduated from high school in June 03 and the youngest just turned one. She and family moved to Ocean Pines MD in Jan 2005.

Bio -- Bruce was at NAVCOSSACT when BH arrived in 1972 becoming Technical Director as Calo moved to the White House project, retiring in Feb. 1995.
From Bruce March 2004, We live in the Shenandoah Valley in a house overlooking the South Fork of the Shenandoah River that Linda designed. I am still an avid organic gardener with a large vegetable garden and a lot of fruit trees. I also got into day lilies a few years ago and enjoy them very much.
I am doing a lot of volunteer work with service organizations, primarily involving Senior Citizens. I am president of the local chapter of the AARP, president of the Page County TRIAD, board member for the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging, board member of the Page County Industrial Development Authority, board member of the Town of Shenandoah Wireless Broadband Authority, deliver Food for Friends in Shenandoah, financial secretary for my church, and secretary for my homeowners association. I also teach a class in computers for Senior Citizens and high school students for a special inter generational project for the Page County Sheriff's Office.
BH Memory: Called him the "silver skater," you could leave his office thanking him for raking you over the coals. Always calm and collected.

He kept this 70/45 Console all these years and plans to wire it up with lights so he can turn it on and make it look like an operational system.”
Bio: I started in November 1971 with NAVCOSSACT as a Site Rep and programmer at NTCC Hampton Roads. Reorganizations pur me in NARDAC, NAVTASC, NCTS WASH, and now SPAWAR. In 2004 reorganization underway I will be in a new Code 30 located in Norfolk, but will continue to work on the NAVCOMPARS/MARCEMP replacement team. I worked my entire career in Norfolk except for one five year period (1986 - 1991) when I was promoted to a requirements analyst position on the original NCP replacement system, IS/A AMPE in Montgomery, Alabama. That only lasted 18 months and then I was in DC for 3.5 years. I went back to Norfolk when Nick Spangler retired. Working two more NAVCOMPARS replacement projects before we finally got it done in early 2002. In 2003/04 working the FMX Rehost project which consolidates everything back into one system again. I hope to retire in about 3 years though eligible July 2004.
My family and I are all healthy and doing well but I lost my Dad in July 2001 and my Mom July 2003. My son, Brandon, graduated from Virginia Tech May 2003 with honors with two degrees in math and computer science. He graduates again this May with honors with a master in computer science and is published in the 2002 ACM Southeast Conference.
PS - just back from Europe[3 week trip with daughter]. High light of trip had to be yelling my head off on Rue de Rivoli in the rain as Lance Armstrong raced around Paris on last time. It was a good day to be an American in Paris.
Bio: -- Peggy submits: I was sold to CDSI and indirectly NAVCOMPARS by Ray Evans in 1973. He got $150 for me. In late 1975, I moved on to other things at CDSI - later I took over as Officer-in-Charge of CDSI's NCP contract. Griff Harrison and later Larry Zumfelde did all the work. All I had to do was provide beer for the annual softball game.
My current husband and I quit working at real jobs a long time ago. We spent 10 or 12 years working with the park service in the summer and hanging out in Hawaii in the winter. We don't work for the park service anymore but still live in Falls Church and hang out in Hawaii in the winter. Pleasantly surprized in June 2003 that new next door neighbor is Essie Horton.
She recalls: Guess what, I reported all those parking tickets on my paperwork. -- Steve Otto - I remember in those wonderfully politically incorrect days of yore - Didn't he have a "Loose Women Tighten Here" sign on his desk?

BH Memory: Wrote a program for ACP127 that was never used. Touching hands to floor without bending knees, which I could not do. Not on White House project due to parking tickets. "Henry, "wants an attachment that keeps house and "screws" on the bed." Built a module home. Found a great swimsuit store that sold tops and bottoms separately. In Jan 2005 e-mailed, "Speaking of older, the other day I bought my first OLD LADY bathing suit. One of those contraptions with a skirt. Should have waited until next winter then I could have paid for it out of my first Social Security check. That's f-ing old!" Great conversations, great programmer and damn wonderful person.

Dave is out in CA looking for some consulting work. Recall back in March he reported he was in Providence RI for three weeks taking a Microsoft course on Windows Server 2003. With the MCSE certification and my SUN Solaris certification should give me the right tickets. I plan to specialize in system integration work, migrating companies from their present networks to newer technology. It seems to be a niche that needs a lot more support especially as we (hopefully) come out of this recession.
Bio -- Dave came in March 1972 in TPS/TCS, installed the four NCTAMS, site rep in San Diego for years, then worked off and on with us as a contractor before joining AOL from which he retired in 2000, got a 46 foot sail boat, moved to Fort Myers FL and lived there on the boat until 2003. The recession hit and scared him back to work for a while.

BH Memory: Jerry was in charge of the Hawaii software group, I cannot recall what they were called, he later moved up to be in charge and thus left our organization. This was back in 72. He visited us a few times and seemed to be our type of guy - "work hard and play hard!"
Other's Memories: Fritz Collier (Site Rep Stockton) recalls, "I remember Jerry from days way back. He and I used to get together and play bluegrass music. He was a fine musician... at that time, I too played fairly well. We had a great time jamming."

I'm in North Carolina now at the nursing home where my mother is. I still work at NIH every day, after a six-week absence, but still come to North Carolina every weekend - at least for a while.
Bio: Bob arrived in Feb of 72. BH believes he left in 84 to SRA International where still works in Dec 03. Currently working on a contract with National Institute of Health in Bethesda MD. Bobby still resides in Fairfax VA. Bobby is a man of many talents and interests. Created broadcast screen automation one night.
BH Memory: Put his "freeblock" console card punch program to work from VDTs. A radio DJ, adult film collection, hardware and software guru, marriage encounter coordinator, and a great friend.
Bo recovering from knee surgery last Oct., it still hurts some. Still working the two jobs. Oldest son remarried last fall and Roberta said that grand daughter planning to marry this coming fall.
Bio: -- Bo and Roberta are living in Goodlettsville TN where they moved not long after she retired. Bo a retired Senior Chief was at NAVCOSSACT as a civilian when BH arrived. He was an instructor for the NAVCOMPARS initial installationsf at the four sites. He retired from NAVTASC in 85-86 time frame. Bo working for Hertz at nearby airport and has 2nd part-time job driving an airport shuttle bus. Fun person to know, everybody has a "Bo" story.

Robert Kevin Brown, 53, of Waldorf died Aug 22, 2006, at his home. Mr. Brown was a computer specialist with the federal government.
Born May 14, 1953, in Flushing, N.Y., he was the son of the late Donald A. Brown and the late Patricia Josephine Cleary.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette Brown. He is survived by his sons, Christopher M. Brown of Columbia and Michael D. Brown of Waldorf; daughter, Patricia T. Brown of Waldorf; brother and sister, Donald Brown and Deborah Brown, both of New York; grandchild, Leamya Brown of Columbia; and two nephews. Visitation was held Aug, 24 at Huntt Funeral Home, Waldorf, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug 25. The Rev. John Barnes will officiate. Burial will take place at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund.
Arrangements are being handled by Huntt Funeral Home.

Reports from Darrell Corum, Danny Phillips, Dan Gibson, Harbach: Bob Brown was found [22 Aug 06] not breathing and rushed to CVista hospital, but they were unable to revive. Please keep Bob's family in your prayers. Bob took over JITC's DISA FSP (CAT III) testing a few years back. [Danny Phillips noted] "I always went to him when I needed a question answered about CUDIXS or NAVMACS." He was a strong co-worker and supporter of the Navy mission. We will miss him
I normally make it out from San Diego to DC for the Duckworth/York tournament but was in Ireland this year on a golf vacation. Hopefully I’ll make it next year and can see some of the old gang like Charlie Rogers and Dave Blasco.
Bio: President of Validity when sold to Titan in 1998. I stayed with them till mid 99 and then was reorganized out. I’ve known Cliff Cooke for over 25 years and when he got involved with SYS Technologies, Inc, I joined him there to make some things happen again.
Bio: - Larry and Theresa moved to Florida in 1994. Larry was working for CDSI on the contract they had to assist the Navy in closing the Naval Training Center. The contract shifted to Dyncorp during that process. Once the base was closed, Larry was moved to the Submarine Training Base at Kings Bay, overseeing secure and non-secure local area network operations at the school. Traveling from Orlando to Kings bay on Sunday and back on Fridays got to be a little to much for the aging Larry, so he applied for a Network Administrator position with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. He was hired and has worked with them ever since. The agency operates 25 Juvenile Detention Center's, over 150 Probation Offices and oversee's 200 + Juvenile Justice Providers (who take kids who are court ordered to a program). The network Larry maintains covers the Central portion of the state, from Ocala in the North Central to Stuart (Southeast) and Ft. Myers (South West). Lots of time on the road, and plenty of work. It pays the mortgage....
Larry and Theresa live outside of Orlando, just off the Interstate 4 and State Road 27 (splits the state down the middle) interchange. They are not far from Disney, and enjoy visiting the Mouse whenever they can. Theresa misses her roots in Southeast Pennsylvania. Larry doesn't miss the cold and snow at all. Their kids (Gwendolyn and Eric) are both grown and married. Gwendolyn is expecting a baby in August so everyone is looking forward to that happy event.
That's about it for our pathetic lives.....
BH Memory: Gene was hearing impaired. He came in as a "govie" in MPS when BH was there at the Navy Yard in bldg. 196 in the late 70's. His hearing hardly slowed him down save the times he would not want to "hear you" (smile).

Bio -- Entered NAVCOSSACT as CSC contractor in 1977 and became a "govie" in 1979. Currently [Nov 2003] married with 2 boys (21 and 26) from a previous marriage. Youngest, Michael, is in the Army. The oldest, Jeff, is living and working in California, MD. My wife Gail has 2 children from a previous marriage. I turned 55 on Dec. 9 2005 and have almost 32 years of government service. I plan on working until January 2007 unless they wave the buyout carrot in front of me. If that happens, color me GONE!. Will stay in Mechanicsville Maryland after retirement since we have most of our roots there.

Bio: In May 2002 Lou offered, "... used to work with NAVTASC on the LDMX/NAVCOMPARS FEP and DCP with Bruce Miller, Dave Williams, Gary Moger, and many others.
The work was technically challenging and the people were outstanding. We cranked out a lot of code and managed to have lots of fun. I have not seen the level of dedication and the level of software development/testing since leaving NAVTASC.
Sandy retired 28 September. Sad day for me. We have been working together for the past 17 years. We spent more time together then with our respective wives. He has no immediate plans to look for a new job or to move out of the area.

BH Memory: Contractor with NAVTASC at Cheltenham and Navy Yard 143, left for job with IM&T Total Switch Architecture (CSC) (Part of "The Pentagon Restoration" just before we moved to building 196. Mike almost had a second income from switching phone companies with their incentive offers (smile).
Bio: --Jimmy says, I cant believe that it has been 18 years since I left building 31 and started down this long road of retirement. Joyce and I spent the first 6 years after retirement Gun Running all over the country. I hooked up with a guy that was a high roller dealer in antique Guns. He made me an offer I couldnt refuse and we spent the next 6 years travelling the entire Unitted states peddling these old relics that were bringing anywhere from 4-5 thousand bucks up to over a 100K. Of which I got a sizeable cut besides having all of our expenses paid. I kept telling this guy how smart he was to have me on his team. Since he finally got wise and devised a more economical scheme Joyce and I have been doing exactly what we want. We travel to the West Coast quite a bit, have taken several cruises (which I hate) and been to England a few times. We are socially active with the Cherry Blossom Festival, the McLean Project of the Arts, The society of Virginia (Which I was president of from 2000-2002) The Canadian Club and several other small social groups. These are good Free-Loading organizations that you can go socialize, eat, drink and have one hell of a good time for very reasonable cash outlay.I keep in touch with a lot of the Old bunch that Did NAVCOMPARSand LDMX. Bob has engineered several Blasco Dinners and of course we all remember the reunion. I have been a volunteer at the Fairfax County recreational park at South Run for about ten years and enjoy every minute of it. I wrk out regularly every day and spend a couple evenings a week helping other get in shape.

Previous Last Word: 06 Dec 05 My dad, Wilmer Cressman, came down with pneumonia while on a Grand Circle tour in Russia, was in an ICU in Moscow from 11 Oct-2 Nov. Was medevaced to Ramstein, spent two days at Lanstuhl, then was medevaced to Andrews AFB on 4 Nov. Was placed in an ICU at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD, on 4 Nov, and has been there ever since. His improvement is very slow, as he is very debilitated. Plan is for him to be transferred to a Nursing Home for skilled nursing care/rehabilitation as soon as he is able. -- from Son Robert at WNY.
Bio: Will passed peacefully on Sunday morning 08 Jan 2006 and put to rest Arlington National Cemetery. Will came down with pneumonia while on a Grand Circle tour in Russia. After 20 days in hopital in Russia, got back to USA and remained in hopital until 20 Dec 2005 to a nursing home in Weaton MD where passed 8 Jan 06. Will retired from NAVTELCOM in 1986. He resided in Silver Spring MD. His wife passed in 1988. He has two grand children in their twenties living in Oregon and one great grand child in Nov 2003. His son Robert, works for Navy Historical Command at WNY. Will said he is enjoying travel and visiting family in my phocon with in Nov 2003.

Bio: [updated April 2006] -- Joined CACI here in Chantilly, VA in June 2005, leaving his Telecommunications Engineer job with General Dynamics in Chantilly. He and wife Laura living in Manassas, VA, but plan to pull up stakes and move to Florida (Port Orange area) mid year, God willing. Will pursue a retirement schedule for a while but hope to find something to keep me busy in the sail making, canvas, and rigging business.. A ruptured disc required surgery in late July 03.
The four kids: Randy, is married to Ana, living in Damascus MD, and works as a special police officer for the US Government; Tamara, and husban Bill, moved to Jupiter, Florida and gave us our first grand child, Trevor William Goble, in September 2005; Sarah living in Manassas, is a business major at GMU; Daniel, is in the Job Corps in Morganfield, KY, studying automobile transmission repair and loving it. He dropped out of the Army last year and was a lost soul for a little while.

Bio: --None yet, I had found him in April 2000 for the Y2K reunion, but he did not come. Told me then was on his third wife, first died in 1990, he married a young girl for about a year-divorced and about 3 1/2 years ago married the best looking twin of a Jewish set from England. Believe he said he would soon be 84.

Bio: A contractor with us at the Navy Yard. Waiting for more bio info from him. He remarried in March of 2003 after losing his wife of 45 years (Joan) in 1999. He retired in April 2004 to his West VA farm that they purchased, along with two minor partners, where we will be breeding, boarding and racing horses. We bought a couple of cheap thoroughbreds and they have placed second, fourth and sixth in the races. We still get a chunk of the purse so we are not doing too bad; I now know where the expression they eat like a horse came form. Photo snapshots

Tom had an MRA (almost like an angiogram) last month that showed a complete blockage in an artery above his heart on the left side. ... schedule to have angioplasty ... on July 27. Then, ...the 19th), he started having ... rapid heartbeat .... ... sent him to Washington Hospital Center, ...(the 21st) ... had cardiac ablation.... He went in ... at 4:00 pm ... done by 6:00 pm and we walked out ,,,e that night at 11:00. The only recovery ... was taking it easy the next day to allow the site that the wires went in to start healing. His heart rate is now in the 65-80 range.
His cardiologist and ... surgeon ,,,[did] scheduled angioplasty ... at Calvert Memorial yesterday. ... did have a stent put in and, again, recovery is pretty much taking it easy today, ...
Bio: [20 Mar 07 Tom updates bio, thanks] -- Tom started his career in Federal Civil Service in 1961 as an Apprentice electronic mechanic at NAS North Island. After serving in various positions at NAS Cubi Point, NOSC and SPAWAR SD he landed at NAVTELSYSIC in 1976. At NAVTELSYSIC he progressed from Test Director to Director NAVTELSYSIC in Oct 1992. In April of 1993 NAVTELSYSIC was transferred to DISA and the JITC where Tom served as Department Head JITC Washington Operations until his retirement in July 1999. He is currently working for Titan Corporation as the Deputy Program Manager, Special Projects Department. Tom married the lovely Judith Griffith (Jody) in 1977. They have two lovely daughters Erin and Lisa. Tom plans on retiring (again) in June 2005 and starting his career of golfing, woodworking and honey do's. The retirement didn't exactly happen in July, more like 30 December 2005. Now I am part time on call but mostly playing golf, doing some volunteer work, honey do's, PC Stuff and wood working. If I can get the ticker fixed life will be grand. .

Bio: I was stationed at NAVCOSSACT, BLDG 196, in the mid and late 60's while in the Navy. I was a DS (Data Systems Tech) and came there for a "C" school on the Primary OPCON System. After 39 weeks of class, I ended up staying there for a 3 year tour. 'Our System' was on the forth deck, but we ended up removing it about 1970, and I went to the training department on the second deck to teach labs. In fact, I had Bill Schultz as a student. When I got out in 1974, I was here in Norfolk and went to work in Code 30 at the detachment here. In 1977 I came to work here at LANT. In fact, I replaced Connie Parker when he left to go to NTSIC.

Last Word: 25 Apr 06 I received your sad note regarding Octaiva Ross. Unfortunately, I don't remember her or anyone by that name. Nonetheless, I've always supported the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure and will always do so (even after I can't run another step.).
Your note included an "Ernestine" which transponded me back to my memory of Ernestine Ashley. She was a special person to me. That was many years ago when we were still on the project. Nonetheless and after all these years, I still remember that super girl from Accokeek (where and what ever that is) Maryland with great fondness.

So here's some of the facts of my life... including two photos of me one, when I graduated High School in Detroit in 1961, and two, when I re-entered High School as a teacher in 2003. Not much different except the deep grooves in my forehead and a new tie. Yeah, I fell back on my teaching credential and took a job facing the desperate in an attempt to accomplish the inculcation of the incomprehensible into the indifferent by the incompetent, and yet remain admirable. Bio: started in November of 1973 -- my first job after college. I worked for Bill Hughes in code 90. He reported to Jerry Connolly. We worked on the database conversion for San Diego and spent a lot of time there. After that, sometime in 1975, our group disbanded and I ended up in MPS working for Hinson. After that I worked for George Hoehl for a time and also Art Latour. I left in October of 1984 to work for Honeywell Federal Systems. I think that place changed names more than NAVCOSSACT/NARDAC etc.

Bio: Won't get around to sending me any. Phcon Jul 05 finds Jerry and spouse Joan doing good in Bowie MD with no plans to move from there. They have two kids living in the area and now have eleven grand children some serving in Iraq. He has suffered a small heart attack and a couple of mild stokes, luckily with no major impairment it seems.

Bio: Took a buyout in Sept 2004 amd retored. Last working at the Navy Yard in Building 196. We have reorganized so many times I'm not sure where I started or where I will end up. There are not a lot of us left from the NAVTASC days. Was holding down the Personnel Office for SPAWAR Charleston. Was waiting for June 2005 to get my 30 years. My husband retired in September of 2002. Our two daughters are married, and we have three grandsons ([Jan 2004]Randy-6, Cameron-3, and Hunter-20 months. They light up my life.
We live off Route 6, below LaPlata and will probably stay there to be near children and grandchildren. Occasionally I meet CeCe Williamson and Ina Bolton for dinner. We met just before Christmas. They are both doing fine. Of course, Ina is still in high gear, donating much of her time to the Food Bank. Cece and Travis travel and hang out at their home in the Northern Neck of VA

Oldest daughter graduated college in July of 03 and is living with husband in San Diego while he completes grad school. Youngest two daughters still at home and a real pain in dad's rear. Planed retirement is less than 8 years and counting.
Jean is holding up as best as possible and her sister, Judy, is there now and will be for about 2 months. Joe is coming home this coming Wed.

Previous Word:14 June 05 -- E-mail from Joe: In case you have not heard, Clint McIntosh, who has been fighting colon cancer for the past couple of years, is now in critical condition at his home in Honolulu. He is under hospice care and has been told he has just a few weeks/couple of months left. I talked to his wife, Jean, last night and she told me to come now would be best if I want to see Clint again.
I am leaving for Hono to see Clint and Jean tomorrow AM, and will return in 5 days. I will be staying downtown and will contact you, if need be, of his condition.
I would appreciate it if you would let the guys/girls who were friends of Clint know what his situation is now. Gratefully, Joe

Bio -- Joe hired BH in 72. He retired in 1994 did some consulting and other work until Cathy was able to retire. They moved to State College PA. We were all "surprised" to learn they have a "MILD" attraction to PENN State football. They also have a "non-football season" home in Homosassa FL.
BH Memory: Joe laid down the "one beer rule" (smile). BH recalls many beers and good times and hard work that was fun too.

The cancer has continued to grow, the spot on the liver has continued to grow, his lungs are filling with fluid which is due to the cancer. Until they get a medication that will put the cancer in remission, there is nothing medically they can do. They have exhausted all of their options.
They will continue to treat him and make him as comfortable as possible. They are making the necessary arrangements for HOSPIS, I guess that is spelled correct. Anyway, you know what I am trying to say.

I took a GS -12 in 1978 relocated to NAVCOMPARS San Diego in January 1980, returned to NTSIC (Cheltenham) in Sept 1984, resigned in 1986 took a job with ENSCO working on a contract at the GE Plant in Baldwinsville,NY., testing underwater sonar, resigned the same year and was hired to work on DDN at CNCTC, retired in 11/26/94.

Last Word: 11 May 04--I am alive. I down here in on Patuxent River Navy Base working for a contractor called Sabre Systems. I'm doing development work for the Mission Planning software the fighter pilots use to plan their missions. We have to take into account plane, weapons, etc...
Last Word: 23 May 04 --I have been in AZ for the last 9 days looking to see if I could afford living there. I have gotten spoiled for TN prices. We drove 1500 miles from the Grand Canyon south to Tucson and around about. My choice would be Tucson for a new job - no doubt. I am supposed to find out Aug. 18 if the IT folks are getting contracted out. We were supposed to find out April 30. Last Word: 30 Mar 04 -- I have been a vagabond the past year and a half. I moved from Dumfries, VA to Fredericksburg, VA and back to Dumfries in the space of one year. After I returned to Dumfries I moved again (within Dumfries). I believe I have done my last move for quite a while now. My wife and I downsized when we first moved to Fredericksburg but found that the place we moved to was too small and too close to our friends in Dumfries (we were traveling back 3-4 times a week) so we decided to bite the bullet and move back. We bought a house in a "adult" community but while waiting for it to be completed, we rented for six months. Finally, our house was completed (last month) and we moved in to what we hope is the last house.
I've been too busy packing, moving, and unpacking. I'm still unpacking but since this is the final destination we're taking our time . . .

Peggy and I founded Lasting Impressions Embroidery Company in May on ’97 and worked out of our home until November of ’99. In November we moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where we re-opened the embroidery business. Our company has gained national recognition for our chenille embroidery. Ron now travels nationally teaching, speaking and writing about automated chenille machine embroidery and digitizing in addition to helping Peggy maintain their facility in Little Rock. Ron joined CDSI in May of ’75 and was assigned to the NARDAC contact in June of that year as a member of the Software Control Group (SCG) where he worked with Everett Dickerson and Radar (Petty Officer Johnson). During this assignment he completed his first programming assignments which included the redesign and implementation of an automated core allocation and loading simulator (NNCOR) used to track and estimate the growth of NAVCOMPARS in support planning and space management requirements on the RCA Spectra 70/45. He was also responsible for the design and implementation of an automated disk allocation simulator, NCDSKARP, also in support of planning and management efforts. Although he may not care to admit it, Bobby Borah provided some wonderful technical guidance to me during this period. It was the beginning of a friendship that spanned many years
. Jul. ’76 – Mar ‘77
Still serving as a member of SCG, Ron went on to do the analysis, design, and implementation of the Software Control Accounting and Tracking System (SCATS). Though he may never admit to it, Mr. David Blasco served as mentor and technical advisor on many development issues. SCATS was composed of thirty assembly language programs there were developed, debugged, and placed in production during a six month period. SCATS provided management information for the tracking, accounting, auditing, and management of the Program Change Proposal (PCP) system instituted by NARDAC. PCPs were the reporting vehicle by which LDMX/NAVCOMPARS sites worldwide submitted requests for emergency program changes, program corrections and system enhancements.
Mar. ’77 – Jan. ‘78
Ron assumed overall responsibility for the maintenance of LDMX.NAVCOMPARS software, systems level utility programs, and Job Control Language run streams and provided necessary software account ability to NAVTELCOM. During this time he designed, developed, and implemented a program designed to accept preformatted data from variable length ISAM files and generate as output a processable RCDISK file for use by the LDMX/NAVCOMPARS Interactive System Simulator. The program performed the same functions as the LDMS/NAVCOMPARS Receive Control Subsystem. This utility package was implemented on the UNIVAC 90/60 VMOS along with procedures for creating the input source file using the VS/9 Editor command language procedure files from an interactive terminal.
During this same time frame SCG was supporting the transition from the 70/45 to the 90/60, Ron developed the procedures and software necessary to allow the update of source programs and macros maintained on the 90/60 using the same source correction material generated for the maintenance of LDMX/NAVCOMPARS source programs and macros on the 70/45.
Feb. ’78 – Sep. ‘79
Ron left SCG to work on the analysis and design of the Virtual NAVCOMPARS Input/Output Subsystem (VNCIO). VNCIO, ultimately implemented by Larry Zumfelde, was created to replace the ISAM disk access which had to be implemented at the last hour to resolve a reentrancy problem detected with the MPDISK file shortly before the converted system was delivered to NARDAC (or was it NAVTASC at that point in time). Ron was responsible for developing a methodology for the dynamic generation of File Control Blocks within a File Definition Module. This methodology was implemented to replace the hard coded File Control Blocks. He was also responsible for the development of a staggering algorithm, which could be used in conjunction with the VS/9 Primary Access Method, would enable NAVCOMPARS to regain the capability to distribute MPDISK segments across multiple disks to ensure message survivability in the event of a disk crash. This ability was lost when the system was implemented on the 90/60 using the ISAM access method.
Oct. ’79 – Mar. ‘80
During this period, Ron worked with BENDIX Field Engineering Corporation at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Here he served as a member of the Program Maintenance Library (PML) section on the NASA contract. He supervised and was responsible for the maintenance of all software implemented on the IBM 360/135 OS system used to generate the scheduling of orbital mission down load link processing, parts and inventory control system.
Apr. ’80 – Jun. 82’
In April ’80, Ron returned to CDSI and the NAVCOMPARS project to work with Bob Hinson in the Software Control Group. Many must have thought this a pair created in _ _ _ _ well lets just say two more committed and hard headed pair of individuals never roamed the halls of NAVTASC. During this period a whole new philosophy of software maintenance and accountability was developed and implemented. It was often accompanied by loud screaming and shouting, oaths and the like, but in the final analysis it proved to be a highly effective and efficient method for maintain the NAVCOMPARS software on both the 90/60 and 70/45 computer platforms. The level of software accountability and reliability improved dramatically as this new philosophy was implemented. For the first time since the employment of an independent testing contractor, NAVTASC was able to stand its’ ground on most issues and demonstrate that many software certification failures were the result of improper testing procedures or application of software changes by the testing contractor. Bottom line, the new methods and procedures reduced the amount of online storage required to house the master libraries by 40%, reduced the processing time required to apply changes and run necessary assemblies/compiles by 30%. At last developers began to admit there was real value in the work performed by SCG. For the first time they also began to trust the Master Libraries. SCG, in conjunction with software developers created, adopted and implemented a uniform file naming convention which described the relationship of source files to the system in terms of its’ implementation in the 90/60 and 70/45 versions of NAVCOMPARS. Based on this naming convention, SCG was able to develop automated a series of VS/9 editor command files that would process the incoming change files and apply them correctly to master libraries on a temporary basis (Temporary Maintenance or TMAINT) until they change was certified and permanently applied to the master library module (Permanent Maintenance or PMAINT). George Hale facilitated additional procedures used by the developers which allowed for the dynamic selection of software changes required to meet NAVTELCOM demands for concurrent development of multiple releases that in some cases crossed over from the 90/60 to the 70/45. Ultimately, life became so crazy, it was necessary to implement the capability to specify the order of application of individual change files during the TMAINT or PMAINT process. No one will likely remember the maximum number of change files that were held at anyone point in time for permanent application to source module, but it was sure to be somewhere above fifteen.
Ron was also successful in implementing a completely new method of release implementation for the NAVCOMPARS sites which eliminated the need for each site to perform maintenance on their macro and procedure file libraries and then run an assembly or compile for every source program changed in the release. SCG performed all of this work at NAVTASC in such a manner that all libraries, except for site unique modules, were pre-configured to release specifications, assemblies performed, compiles runs, and all printed output written to disk files which were then backed up to magnetic tape. SCGs’ toughest and often most vocal critic, Fritz Collier, Stockton, California, performed the acid the first time this new delivery method was attempted. Ultimately, even Fritz agreed that things were being done right and that there was great benefit to the site manages. The change eliminated the need for the sites to apply massive numbers of change files, or bean check source files against lists of changes, after assemblies and compiles which would take several days on site – at each site – representing hundreds of man hours.

Ron continued with CDSI working on several contracts including ones with NARDAC and BUPERS. He was working on the BUPERS contract when he decided to “Retire” from the computer world and take up commercial embroidery.

Previous Last Word: 16 Jul 05 will not be able to make it to the August lunch. Duke and I are leaving for Vegas on the 6th and then to Kaui, HI on the 13th. We will not be back till the 23rd. We are finally using some of our timeshares this year, instead of just taking motorhome trips.
We've had our grandson since the last week in June and he will finally be going home the first of August. My daughter Stacy is having another child in October so we are looking forward to that. Ty is 12 so she has to start all over getting the baby stuff together.

Bio: -- I was in the active duty navy from 1969 - 1980 and last worked at NAVCAMS EASTPAC Hawaii and NAVCAMS WESTPAC Guam as a CUDIXS instructor and NCP Chief-in-Charge respectively. I was recruited as an NCP Site Rep by Chuck Wall when I decided to get out of active duty around 1980. I moved to Stockton California and worked at NAVCOMMSTA Stockton with Fritz Collier as an NCP Site Rep from 1980 to 1987. In 1987 I went to work at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California for ten years. It's a community college where I helped build and implement a Student Information System and HR/Payroll system developed in Object Oriented software using Smalltalk/VisualWorks. In 1997 I moved to Lafayette, Indiana (to be closer to my then wife's family) and went to work at Purdue University as a programmer/analyst. At the time they were developing a student recruitment system using Smalltalk/VisualWorks as a pilot and I kind of fit right in. As an aside, Purdue bought the student system (System 2000) from San Jaoquin Delta College I help build. Although that system wasn't used, the developers analyzed it and took some ideas from it. For the next six years, I continued to help develop and extend the features in the recruitment system into a more sophisticated Student Information System. In 2002, new management decided to buy versus build, and off we went to find and ERP solution for the whole campus (HR, Financial, and Student). Some of the developers went to the ERP project, and I was promoted to manage the 12 developers left to maintain the student applications until ERP implementation. By the way, I completed my naval career in the reserves and retired in 1998 as an E-8. I've recently attained my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Bio: Barry Faba, 52 [03/07/06, has lived in Northfield, MN, for about 24 years, and continues to do so. He has a couple of large-ish telescopes which help him keep up with neighborhood current events. He has three children, tropical fish, and a wife. Two of the preceeding have left home, and occasionally one of the others is flushed down the toilet. He has been married for what seems an eternity, which has been good training for later. He currently pretends to work at Compellent Technologies, as a professional bottleneck. He also gets to write code. He drives a lot, and at the moment has one and 3/4 cars in the garage, which he believes is the traditional way to maintain a garage. His house has an old and new section, each painted in a slightly but noticeably different shade of light brown; the garage door is another slightly different shade of brown. This makes it easy to find his house, with the added bonus of keeping neigborhood taxes down, a thankless task. He rarely finishes yard projects, preferring to let continental drift deal with them. He thought planting an apple tree in the back yard was a good idea. He was rescued from drowning a couple of years ago, which was OK, aside from the fact he wasn't drowning, which irritated the lifeguard no end when he discovered that. He has opinions, and if pressed, will share them. For example, he takes the long view on recycling, in that everything gets recycled, eventually, so there's no need for any immediate action; as far as the impact on the unborn generations, well, what have they ever done for him? He looks 40-ish, by the way, gals. Speaking of gals, he came -this- close to getting fixed up with Sharon Stone, but the fixer-upper thought he wouldn't like her. Wife thought it was a great idea, though, and was disappointed when it didn't work out. He washes his own clothes, and no, the whites aren't pink; however, this is accomplished simply by not having any red clothes. In 1989 he spent four weeks in the Soviet Union by invitation of the Soviet Academy of Sciences ("You have dollars? Da? We invite you then."), secretly undermining their economy by handing out packets of 3M PostIts - he knew they'd want more - need more, actually - and that would require their tossing that centrally-planned goofiness into the dustbin of history, upgrading to a market economy, and stealing PostIts from work like everybody else. He was given a medal by somebody there, mainly to commemorate getting the medal. This sort of recursion appeals to him. He'd like to get interested in opera, really, he would...really...someday, perhaps...when he has the time. He still buys vinyl recordings, which he thinks are much cooler than CDs, especially when played through ancient McIntosh amps. Some summer nights he puts Bach on the turntable, cranks it up a bit, goes outside, looks up at the stars, and wishes he was there.
BH Memory: Yes, had half a car he rebuilt at nights in my garage one winter coming over by moped and often just sleep on sofa as to cold to go home or to late, etc. Wife wasf beginning to think we were taking him to raise which would have been like have two sets of twins! CDSI programmer that worked for BH when BH MPS team leader and we did the MRDIS (do I recall it correctly) - the machine to replace that very, very cute Xerox operator in LANT that copied messages for OTC delivery.
Hey, hope you're doing ok ... things in my world are fine - work good, family life good, relationship life? Well, still working on it ... c'est la vie.

A month ago, I switched to a Northrop project with the Red Cross in Test Engineering (shades of JITC!). There are 40 people in that department alone - pretty big operation. Northrop and other contractors develop and maintain all of the software that supports the blood donation, testing, production and distribution processes - very interesting stuff, CMM Level 3 since it's all FDA regulated - blood is treated as a drug.
Long Term: I'd like to work in DC - (please contact me if you see an opening that might be a good fit..)!
Short Term: I'm going to Vegas tomorrow - the COTR job will have to wait ;-> ...

Dec 2002 reported had diagnosed with a neurological disease/condition called "essential tremors"..., it is kind of like Parkinson's... at the stage now that I can't write or sign my name… There is an experimental operation of placing a sort of pacemaker in my chest and an output device in my head behind by ear that currently has a 75% success rate I may try down the line. Alma and I still have great times visiting places and traveling....

The work's great (for work). I'm in the Multimedia Engineering Dept. We install VTC stuff on ships and shore sites. . I play trumpet in the Charleston Community Band. We practice every week at The Citadel. I'll retire when I stop having so much fun or when I get old. It's already too late to say whichever one comes first.

Bio-- CDSI contractor that wrote MPAS, MPVDT, and MPIO in MPS subsystem in 72. Did Norfolk installation and moved up in CDSI to be president.
Stonie says[May 2004], I left CDSI and Maryland in late 1996 in a divorce process and followed my soon to be ex and sons to Orlando. There I got into the golf resort development business for a couple of years (see www.ocngolf.com) which turned out not to be as much fun and profitable as I thought it would be. At least not with a crook for a partner (Read: I lost my shirt).
I then thought I needed to be back in the IT business (or starve) and I got recruited to be President & CEO of a start-up healthcare software company located in Toronto, Canada I lived in downtown Toronto for six months (great city if you're single) and met my current (last) wife Christine through a friend in early 1999. She lived and worked in Dallas so when we got married in November 1999 I moved to Texas. I also inherited a two year old son from Christine--Matthew--who's "first father" died of a heart attack when he was 9 months. I'm the only dad he'll ever know.
Since then I've moved most all the company's operations to the U.S., primarily Chicago, and I commute there from Dallas (actually McKinney, TX) or somewhere else every week. Yes I hate it but I still have to feed the better part of two families plus we never have to pay anything to fly, rent a car or stay in a hotel (1,000,000+ mile club). Matt's now seven, plays baseball, soccer and swims in the summer. We spend almost every summer weekend on Lake Texoma (TX/OK border). My two teenager boys are still in Florida: Chris (19) will be a sophomore at Florida State University majoring in girls, cars and partying (no idea where he gets this). Michael (17) is a senior in HS and is the more studious of the two (somewhat). They both are 6'3" (don't know where they get this either) and like to wakeboard, surf, skateboard, etc. in addition to the girls, cars, etc.
That's about it. With lifetime alimony, a seven year old and three to put through college I'll never be able to retire and plan to keel over at my desk at some time in the (hopefully distant) future.

Bio: I came to Cheltenham in 1987 as a contractor working for Jimmy Craven. In 1988 I was brought on a govie and went to work in Bldg. 50 for Bob Boggs working on the RTS project. Since then I think I have worked for every manager there was at Cheltenham.
I was wet behind the ears as far with the Navy LDMX system in 82. Charlie and Roger really helped me out training at Crystal City before I went to Puerto Rico. Despite long days, Charlie went out of his way to help me learn.
Charlie always had a hearty laugh and easy confidence around any problem. I remember how the COMMSTA really depended on Charlie and Roger and they came through on tough problems, rebuilding the old 'washing machine' sized hard drives or on solving arcane points of Navy comms.

My involvement in NAVCOMPARS started at NTCC Crystal Plaza in the early 70s when we installed one of the first LDMX systems. As the ADP officer at NCS Washington (W1, CWO2, 3), I was responsible for the initial operation at XTAL Plaza. I worked with Johnny Norman, Joe Davis, Bill Bryson, Tom Carmany, Jerry York and Steve Sheehan among many others during this period. Following a tour on USS Independence I served as OIC NTCC Breezy Point followed by a 3-years tour as traffic officer at NCTAMS LANT where we use the 70/45. They installed the 90/60 right after I left for Puerto Rico. I retired as a LCDR in 1983 following a 3-year tour in NCS Puerto Rico and went to work for Validity Corporation where I remained until Validity was purchased by Titan

Spent about six years on the White House project before returning to NAVCOMPARS. When we moved to Cheltenham and commuting got to tiring, I moved to Fort Meade where I have been doing software engineering and research ever since. My emphasis has been on data mining and Information Retrieval. I have no plans to retire.
My wife Gail is volunteer coordinator for an interfaith charitable organization called the Coalition for Compassion. My younger daughter Naomi has joined the "family business" as Gail jokingly says; she works for NGA. My older daughter Mara on leave from the American Psychological Association (APA) and her husband Avi Fishman presented our first grandchild, a girl, Yael Adina Fishman, on groundhog day 2005.
