Bio: I started my journey with NAVTASC in October of 1984, as a contractor, working for CDSI. I started on the same day as Mary O'Klausner, and a week after Cathy Herriwig. Cathy and I started our work on the Software Control Group's (SCG) test team, working for Jimmy Craven. This is also where I met JC Young, who became one of my "life characters". Yes, I was a "basement rat" in Bldg 31, at Cheltenham. We may have been looked down on by some, but we knew how to have fun and enjoy our work. There were so many people that I liked working with down there that I could fill pages remembering them all.
Around 1987, I moved into a programming slot in SPS, working for Mitch Campbell, just after Earl Knowles retired. I was given some weird ass task of something that I can't even remember now, but which involved automating some roladex file, using COBOL. I struggled with that for a couple of years before getting it to the field and then it was never used. I also got the "privilege" of working on SRPA, and cut my teeth with Assembly on SFRD. Now there were a couple of programs that surely drove the original authors crazy.
Then came the real fun, after NAVCOMPARS started its Death March. I started working for Theresa Williams (McVeery) on a PC project for DESCIM, which was a joint services environmental system. What a debacle. First, we had to write (basically) a DOS type GUI, using Ada. Once we accomplished that, they scrapped it and wanted us to convert that system to Windows, using Delphi (Pascal), and once we had that done, they scrapped that, and wanted a web based application. And that is when I figured that it was time to head back to Ohio... and I sort of came full circle, because when I left, I was working for Mary O'Klausner.
17 of some of the best years of my life were spent with the NAVTASC LDMX/NAVCOMPARS family. I would list all of the people that I fondly remember, but there are so many, that I know that I would forget to mention a couple, and I would hate to leave them out.

I saw note of your bypass operation. I’m glad you came through that OK and I wish you speedy recovery. I had an “event” back in ’96 – at about 35K feet – on a return business trip from Houston to Boston. I ended up landing in Burlington, VT (!) when the plane was weathered-out of Boston & they had to get me on the ground. Luckily, all turned out OK for me after the unexpected one-week stay in Burlington. ;^)--Mark
Bio: 08 Dec 05 -- I was (briefly) an instructor for the AN/FYK1(V) system before they discontinued it, the instructors were all told to "go find work" - a strange directive for people in the Navy who are used to being assigned specific duties. I first joined the group working on simulation for what would be the WWMCS replacement for the CDC systems I had supported in Hawaii. Edith Milgram was running the group. Then I stumbled across the monitoring group where my friend and neighbor, Jon Veach had landed. That was the best place I could end up prior to being discharged because it helped me develop a whole new set of skills and to do some things I never would have done. I was sent to Univac 1108 FORTRAN, COBOL, and assembler schools, a systems analysis school, and a report writing class. We were tasked by the CNO with providing an analysis of EDP operations at various locations, the heads of which were seeking to make large equipment purchases. My job was to design the monitoring hardware, determine attachment points for our monitor probes; test the design time-stamped states & events; and then participate in the tests, data reduction, report writing, and final reviews. The whole thing was an eye-opener for me and really broadened my horizons. I nearly stayed on, doing the same job, as a civilian when I was discharged from the Navy in '73. Unfortunately, they couldn't get me into a GS position because of gov't cutbacks at the time, so I was to be hired through a contractor, with the commitment that I'd be brought in as a GS just as soon as things loosened up. I had a lack of confidence in the process and went to Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) on their WW fly & fix squad. I remained with DEC, which was swallowed by Compaq, which was swallowed by HP, from '73 until October {2005) when I took an early "retirement" package. Now I have to decide what I want to do for my next career.

Bio: Retired early 2004 from JITC, took a buy out. She was heavily involved with the NAVMACS/CUDIXS programs in the early days of NAVTELSYSIC. In a "re-org" became part of NAVTASC for a time supporting NAVMACS/CUDIXS. Then back to JITC to finish career. Moved to Nokomis FL where they had a house built and spent winter landscaping and organizing. Then in May [2005] drove back up to Solomons, MD where their boat had been stored for the winter and set out on 10 week cruise.
BH Memories: Had a sister-in-law working at Naval Research Lab when BH was on temp duty there. Was named Handbury, remarried becoming Hanna which confused BH for about a month.

Bio: I started working for Don Jochum at NAVTASC in 1989 and stayed with the organization through several reorgs until leaving SPAWAR in 2002 to work for the Comptroller of the Currency. They haven't asked me to leave yet. I continue to live in Waldorf with husband Randy...and we are looking forward to having our two children out of college (January 2004). When the nest emptied, Randy and I got certified for scuba diving and take a trip each year to dive a new site. I remain, as Bob affectionately called me, "The Wicked Witch of the West" (because I hail from Utah).
At this time we're scheduled to go State Collage PA to visit with Kathy & Joe that weekend.

Bio:--A "back-seat driver" flyboy in the Marines that somehow found his way to NCP at the WNY which was good for us. Moved on to BBN and last with VERIZON. He and his great wife Diane live in Springfield VA. Had four boys all working around the country and four and a half grand-kids [as of 20 Dec 2005].

The show features 5 stories of East Germans who escaped over, under, and through the Berlin Wall. It also features historical footage, and commentary from veteran Tom Hartney (whom many of you know), former W. Berlin police officer Reinhard Von Bronewski, Professor James McAdams of the University of Notre Dame, and Richard Hebstreit, a former E. German border guard.
They also built a 3D model of each stage of the Wall, to show how it changed over time. Keep an eye out for the "Death Strip" in the 2nd generation. There's a minute long shot, all in 3D, traversing the entire area...I think its quite interesting to see

Bio: -- Originally came on to the LDMX back in 72 where I worked on DPOLS. Moved over to NAVCOMPARS and wrote MPAN. Left after 5 ½ years to join DSA where I went to work on Autodin II. Since then have worked with numerous systems and am now a CMM consultant for Base Technologies, Inc. in Tysons. Still married to Diane after 35 years. In the past 10 years I have done work in London, Stuttgart, Geneva, and the Hague.

BH Memory: Trivia junkie and Irish nut. Lots of ale, beer, jokes, fun and Rugby. I took Blasco to airport one time to meet Tom and rugby team for trip to England. We met in a crowded little bar area that was packed. By time they had to catch plane the rugby team had filled the bar and squeezed almost every one out. And were quite polite as they squeezed into spaces child sized. When they charged out to catch plane there was one customer, the two bartenders and I.
Recall we heard that Dale went in the Civista Medical Center in LaPlata Sunday 13th February 05 when Pam Hundley (Dale's fiancee) e-mailed JC. On 17th we got ...he has been diagnosed with a neurological infection. Doctors say that with heavy doses of antibiotics for the next 4 to 6 weeks he should recover. 25 Feb went home after setup to do IV antibiotics at home.
As JC passed on to his kids, "Please include Dale (Hayes) in your prayers. He is the guy I use to travel to Rt 210 to get our annual "ribs and chicken" order from."

Progress Reports on 17 June 2005 auto accident. BH Memories: Mary was the "Godsend" in purchasing at NTSIC when BH was getting the FOTACS project off to failure. A wonderful, helpful, and thoughtful manor in a position where I often encountered "nay-sayers." She retired from NTSIC in 1986 regretfully, moving with husband Vann to their long-time vacation cottage-home near Reedville VA in the Northern Neck (my home area). Her daughter Donna was then working with us in building 31 at Cheltenham. Mary and Van were friends to CeCe and Travis Williamson and some years ago had introduced them to the Northern Neck and they also retired to their cottage-home property near Mary and Vann. I visited with Mary and Vann for lunch each fall for several years when on my week long fishing-camping trips to Buzzard's Point Marina less than a mile as the crow flies from their place. Then the brother, from Northern end of the Neck who his boat there, got into a spat with his brother (now a doctor in Washington state) and our fishing trips stopped in 2002. I called Mary in Nov 2003 and found she was then 78; had a knee replacement back in June' Donna had back surgery that August; otherwise she and Vann were doing well. Then June 16 2005 hear from Donna that Mary had been in an auto accident on 13th (e-mails and progress) and Donna told me that Vann had passed in February from "…minor laparoscopic (surgery, and basically, the surgeon screwed up, nicked an artery, and he bled out…" |

Bio: --Jack, a retired submariner retired from NTSIC/JITC in Feb 1998. Living in southern Maryland with our own Chris Wink of NAVTASC/NCTC. They were married in 1991. Chris happily began working in Dahlgren, VA, less commute, in October 2003 as part of the retirement and reorganization of NAVTELCOM.
Have four grand kids now [Feb 2007] the fourth via our oldest, Kimberly, after couple mis-carriages,her second boy. She is diabetic since six years old. Tyler her first came in Aug 1999. She and family living in Garrisonville VA as Brad a retired marine as of Jan 09) about three years after third Middle East tour (volunteering each time!!) in the Middle East ended in March 06. Middle daughter, Julie, still lives in Charolette NC with grand son and grand daughter finding a forclosed house in June 2011. Ex-husband, Chris, walked out after 13 years in Aug 2010 apparently with comment marriage was "too hard". She is trying to move forward and keep kids on track with same school and friends. Just got news 15 July she got a job. Is getting decent support for Ex as long as he holds a job. Brad, the youngest, still doing well as very good mechanic and living nearby. Settling down some and checks in frequently and helps as needed. Not married so far which disappoints Nancy, but too much fun with 31 foot cabin crusier nnd 20 foot ski boat yet.
Health Rpt: 15 Jul 11 Continue struggles sith diabetes and its effects. First indication of kidney problems found in 2006, continuing efforts to keep sight (no real bleeding for several years (keep finger crossed) as Jul 2011. Had second open heart surgery bypass surgery in Sept 2005 (tonly hree this time, first in 96 was five) and my first heart attack while on the operating table! First heart surgery in 1994 was up through the groin to heart clean out three of four blocks procedure. Then a mild stoke in 1998 on left side. And been fighting going blind since 1993 with unkown number of laser surgerys to retina, needle opertions on each eye and in 2004 lens replacements in both eyes for cateracks.
Still here in Springfield in July 2011 talking of Nancy retiring and maybe moving out of damned Fairfax County

His service is on May 7 (dad's birthday) at 11 am at the st. boniface church in cold spring, MN. there will be a luncheon afterwards in the gathering room attached to the church. it should be quite the ceremony, as he will have military honors bestowed as well as the memorial service. Bio: -- Don, retired in early 1990s, and soon after moved to Minnesota with wife Nancy. Just before the move they lost their daughter Sandra (age 25) to a blood clot from a broken toe. In 2002 he had a successful fight with Leukemia. Then March of 2003 Don fell down their home elevator shaft gashing his elbow, banging his head, breaking his pelvis and fractured three vertebrae. In June/July 2003 surgery infused a type of "cement" into the vertebrae relieving much pain. Iin early August he had eye surgery to correct retina damage suspected from hitting his head during his fall. As luck continued, he had a Gall Bladder surgery in August that was followed with a case of the shingles into October. Underwent hip surgery in 21 November 2003. In March 2004 able to drive and walk with a cane, but having eye surgery to remove membrane on the retina. I spoke with Don 21 Jan 05 and he was in good spirits despite his continued "good luck", at that time he was on oxygen, dragging a tank around. He had an unknown form of pneumonia that was not responding to the usual drugs. So a bit confined to the house, but he saw as a plus since had been around 20 below zero. He asked me to say Hi to all. Nest word he had passed 24 April 2005.
But through it all he maintained good spirits. Thanks he says to a lot of family and friends help and care.

Bio: Joined CDSI in 1978 in Hawaii from UNIVAC. Trained under Clint [McIntosh] on NAVACOMPARS. Was Site Rep at Wihiawa. Also spent time at the other two sites. In 1979 was transferred to the Navy Base in Poulsbo, WA. Trained the navy personnel. Installation of the system was delayed a year. Was installed in Sept 1980. No problems. Served there as Senior Site Rep till Jan 1984. Transferred to London. Three years and three months in England. Back to Bangor. Navy had cut site reps to one per base. For a year I filled in at San Diego, Stockton and Guam. In March 1988 CDSI and I severed relationship. Went to work for EDS in Poulsbo. Five years and was downed sized. Am completely retired. At 87 years [13 Jul 2005] what else?
Born Oct. 17, 1932, in Anniston, Ala., he was the son of the late Ernest Kangelos Sr. and the late Josephine Kangelos. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Kangelos. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Patricia Mae Crown Kangelos of Waldorf; daughter, Angela Kangelos McCauley of Waldorf; sisters, atherine Goman of Georgia, Ernestine O'Koneski of Maryland and Josephine Nolen of Florida; stepchildren, Wallace C. Strong, Corinne Dennis, Melinda Tinius and Jenna Robinson; seven grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives.
Services were held Sept. 5 at New Life Presbyterian Church -P.C.A. in Waldorf, with the Rev. Bill Wilkerson officiating. Interment will be held at Highland Cemetery in nniston, Ala., on Sept. 7. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Charles County, P.O. Box 1703, La Plata, Md. 20646, or New Life Presbyterian-P .C.A at 3413 Gough Drive, Waldorf, Md. 20602. Arrangements were provided by Eberwein Funeral Services in Waldorf.
Health Report: In April 2000 we were told, "Ernie has been diagnosed with Liver Cancer. His prognosis, according to what I have been told, is not very good." Dave Blasco spoke with him in the hospital befoe the Y@K reunion and Ernie asked us not to announce his conditon at that time.
"When I don't have anything else to do, I like to visit Civil War battle fields and walk along the C&O Canal. Over a period of two years, I've managed to walk the entire length at least once." He and wife, Susan, are living in Walforf MD. Daughter, Megan, got married in Jan 2003.
Last Word: 20 Apr 06 I'll be walking again this year in memory of Faye and in honor of the many cancer survivors that I've gotten to know over the past two years.

29 Aug 05 … 12 months after demolition, 19 months after moving in with friends, and 19 1/2 months after our house was heavily damaged in the flood surge from Hurricane Isabel., [Joe, the boys and I] finally moved into our new home, dubbed by our neighbors as the Klausner Towers. To make the house flood proof, we had to build up. The views of the Chesapeake Bay are just outstanding. We're slowly getting unpacked and may be able to fit one car in the double drive through garage by Labor Day.
Bio: Worked with the NAVCOMPARS gang from 1990 to 1994, starting at Cheltenham. Now working for BAE Systems in California, MD in St Mary's county. In April 2005 will have been married to Sandy for 19 years, which is amazing that she put up with me this long.... smile. I am attending Grad School. My youngest son is in Germany, got married in March 2004 and has a son. The oldest son had a boy and girl both nine years old. The boy lives with me and thinks he is 39. The granddaughter is living in Hampton Va. And we have one dog that thinks we live for him.

I started at NAVCAMS MED 81-85 as a RM for NCP (a great time in my life)! Arrived at Cheltenham in 85 and worked for John Kost and CDSI until 89 (the best time of my career). I was re-aquainted with the group at a reunion [Y2K] that brought back many great memories. I worked on the tranistion from AUTODIN to DMS for the Air Force up until 2000 sometime. I am currently [29 Dec 05] working for Bay County Board of County Commissioners in Panama City doing system implementations. My son just joined the Navy as an E-3 and will be working as an aviation mechanic! I plan on being in Florida for 2 more years and then who knows whare I'll be next.
Denny Jr is working there too, so it's a family affair. He is 20 now and still living at home. Kristy and her husband, Giani, are living in Prince Frederick and doing great. She is working for a Real Estate Broker in Dunkirk and making great money. Giani gave up being a Chef and went in the Elevator's Union. Better hours, better pay and better benefits. No grandkids yet, but maybe next year.

Graduated from UNC – Chapel Hill in 1965 and went to work for the part of RCA that later became Univac. During that time I was the project lead for development of the AutoDin interface that was later used for the initial NAVCOMPARS installations. As I remember it, it was a 19200 bps screamer. After several intermediate employers, I went to work for Computer Sciences. I think it was 1973. Bob Ennis was my manager. I worked on LDMX at the Navy Yard until the San Diego installation. I went to San Diego for what I thought was a two week installation support effort. I wasn’t too happy about going because I had just bought a boat and started living aboard.
I was in San Diego about a week when I decided I really, really didn’t want to go back to DC. What’s not to love about San Diego? I worked out a deal with CDSI to be site rep in San Diego with Ken Zepernick for a year then go on to Guam to replace Dick McClain – if they would give me time to sail my boat out there. I spent most of the next year living on my boat in San Diego Harbor just down the street from the LDMX installation at Broadway and Harbor Drive. Christmas Day 1975 I started out for Hawaii to spend a couple of months getting oriented to the NAVCOMPARS differences. I was alone. The trip took 23 days.
I was in Hawaii spending time at Pearl Harbor and Wahiawa so I could be a competent site rep. I headed off to Guam in early April 1976 with a woman I had met in Lahaina. I arrived on Guam 12 days before Typhoon Pamela. My boat was battered up against a seawall and sank. I had the wreck pulled out of the water, cleaned it up and sold it to a local man who eventually rebuilt it (I heard).
I was on Guam for a year working with Stan Wassel. I took a month off to go back to HI and ferry a boat from HI to Guam. At the end of the year, my girlfriend and I signed on as crew on a 100’ sailing yacht that was finishing a South Pacific trip and being ferried to the Mediterranean. We got off the boat in the Maldive Islands and flew back to the US.
I was in Silicon Valley for the next eight years working for various companies. During that time I learned to fly and got my commercial, instrument and multi-engine ratings and my glider license. I managed to get transferred to Phoenix with Motorola where I stayed for the next 11 years. During that time I worked as a glider tow pilot at Estrella Sailport, had a wonderful two year stint as a flight instructor (instrument, multi-engine) and earned my ATP multi-engine rating. I also got to teach aerobatics in a Pitts S2A and a Great Lakes. I was thinking about flying for the airlines when my wife started having babies. Economic reality put an end to flying but my two daughters were more than adequate compensation for giving up flying.
From Phoenix, I went to Sacramento and found a very unstable job market for embedded computer types. I have been in Portland area working for Flir Systems since 2007. It was easily the best company and the most enjoyable work of my 46 year career. I retired June 1st this year. I will be moving to Placerville, CA, in the next month or so where my wife and I have a house on 2 acres. Our address will be 2420 Empress Lane, Placerville, CA 95667. I have been fortunate to enjoy excellent health during all this. I hope it continues into my retirement J I’m looking forward to doing some writing, photography and organic gardening – and whatever else turns up.

Living with Stan and Jane Wassel for the first week after my boat sank. No power, no air conditioning, but the couch was soft and the company was great.
Putting a patch into the AutoDin box and finding out it pumped 24 hours worth of Flash traffic into the wall before anyone noticed. I think that was during the Mayaguez incident.

Stan Wassel died in San Diego a few years ago (2005?). I got together with Jane in San Diego last weekend for dinner and reminiscing. She is doing quite well.

Last Word: 17 Nov 04 Found Larry doing well at age 64 he says. He and Amy are living in Alexandria VA. He is able to walk without any support apparatus and able to drive again. He found a doctor in 99 that really knew how to treat and rehabilitate him. Had cataract surgery not to long ago. They have a house they rent out in South Nags Head they are getting repaired as it took some hurricane damage.
Now in addition the being the happiest camper in town, I think I'm also the most joyful one. So watch out all you Evolutionists - I have a couple of wonderful tools - my once, deep-seated Atheist dance partner is now a believer.
One last bit of news. I'm still enjoying teaching ballroom dancing, but I'm not having much luck getting dance parties going way out here in southern MD.
So, I tried to share my idea of fun with the congregation, but while the ballroom dancing worked out pretty well (after a few deep gulps by the conservatives), the very social Party Bridge (where everybody gets to play with everybody else) I offered to teach and direct didn't. And I thought they were so progressive. Autonomous, yes. Progressive, still got a ways to go.
Ah well, win some, lose some. Actually, I would have had a tiger by the tail because none of the books out there try to teach a simplified version of bridge.

Bio: While I enjoyed my many years at NAVCOSSACT, etc. from Sep 63 to retirement in Jan 91, I believe that I am now one of the happiest campers in town. Of course, I wish all of you a happy life as well. By the way, in addition to my favorite pass-time of dancing, I'm still into brain teasers for any of you interested. In March 2004 reported had established ballrrom dancing classes with his "dance partner" in Prince Frederick.

Just when I thought things were getting better and the cancer was in remission, I had a small heart attack in July. I had triple bypass and came out of it with flying colors. I seriously feel better than I have in a couple of years. The cancer is still in remission and I'm working out at least 3 times a week. Heck, it sure beats the alternative. Gayle and I bought a piece of property in NC that we plan to build on in about 5-6 year.

Last Word: 20 Dec 06 It was reported, "Dick is doing fine and has moved in with one of his daughters in Northern Virginia as his wife has been admitted to an Alzheimer's facility close by. He still has the home in Nags Head and goes down there at least once a month. He is in good health."

Then picked to stand-up NTSIC (that became JITC) at Cheltenham with Gerry York. Retired from NTSIC and soon moved to Nagshead NC. Has five daughters whose kids are now keeping him real busy I hear.
BH Memories: Great guy except for poor attitude by him and Gerry, something about documentation not matching code. Blasco used to tell me Dick and his Dad had some falling out and Dick called his Dad up one day and said you have not been to work for some days or such and your fired if your not here in a hour. Supposedly Mr. Blasco had retired a couple of days ago being of time and age. So far Dick has not read his bio to confirm or deny that story. And Art Latour told how Dick used to really needle Bryson at meetings, any truth Dick?
A loss of function is what we all get at this time of life, it just depends on the function. Me, I've lost a few functions, I just can't remember just which ones.
I'm glad to hear you are reformed!!! How long has Nancy been trying to get you to live right??? I just noticed the time you added your post, 2:00 AM. I am glad to see you are reformed!!! I have a friend who has had two heart attacks and is still living in denial. My last blood sugar count was "elevated" and the doctor scared the ______ out of me. Just thinking about what you have gone through led me to change some of my eating habits. I miss the sodas but the 41g of sugar per soda is a lot, especially since I was drinking about three a day. Water is better than any diet soda, so water water everywhere.
So you want to go back to work? I am sure NAVCOSSACT needs somebody with just your skill set.
Well, I am still working at Lockheed Martin as a Local Area Network Administrator, it is interesting and keeps me off of the street and out of the house. I also get paid for doing what I enjoy!!!!! My main job is to watch the programmers work and to rebuild their computers after they tweak the Windows Registry and wonder what happened. I also get to play with servers. I don't miss programming and since they don't have programs in Assembly Language and they don't have any punch card machines, I guess I'll continue to not program. At any rate I don't have to worry about programmers who never ceased to harass me about an end of file mark that he had to put into his program, I think it was an end of file or end of something. Some things you never forget and others you just try to forget, but can't!!!!
